Loughborough & District Amateur Radio Club

QSL cards from previous special events

The QSL cards here on view are those issued after special event stations were activated by the Loughborough and District Amateur Radio Club. GB2KA was the callsign used by the club at A Girl Guide Camp at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire circa 1996.

GB50NL was celebrated 50 years after the Normandy Landings on D-Day 1944. The picture depicts the landing beaches and gives the names of the Commanders of the various battle groups. Many of the men who took part were stationed at Quorn near Loughborough prior to the landings.

The Carillon, located in the Queen's Park, was erected as a memorial to the fallen in World War One and contains a fine peal of bells and a military museum. The bells were cast at the Taylor's foundry in Loughborough. The callsign reflects 70 years since it's construction.

GB2ORB was operated at Stanford Hall in Leicestershire at another Guide camp.

This special event GR8VJ was activated in 1995 to commemorate 50 years since victory over Japan in 1945. Not only was a special event call issued but a previously unused prefix was issued.

A station, GB2MM, was set up early on the year 2000 at Beaumanor Hall to celebrate the millenium. Beaumanor Hall was the wartime home of some of the 'Codebreakers' and worked very closely with their associates at Bletchley park during WW2.

Each year, one weekend is set aside to activate museums around the British Isles. In 2001, LADARC setup the special event GB2SDP in the Century Theatre at the Snibston Discovery Park, Coalville, Leicestershire. The Century is a 'retired' mobile theatre which for many years toured the counties of northern England with it's resident cast performing various plays.

Another annual event is the 'Mills on the Air' weekend. This activity was carried out at the Shepshed Water Mill just a couple of miles from Loughborough using the call GB2WMS.

50 years on after the victory in Europe, LADARC celebrated with a special event station again with a special call with the GR8 prefix.
